One category that you will find at our website is roofing. We provide antique reclaimed roofing and tiles. The different areas of the world which these reclaimed materials have been sourced from include France and Spain. They have been reclaimed from cottages and farmhouses throughout these countries. Some of the different types of exquisite roofing and tiles that you will find include Italian rose roof tiles, cobblestone and French roof tiles, reclaimed French red flat brick roofing, Spanish terra cotta roofing tiles, and much much more. A particular type of roofing that we promote and offer a wide variety of is terra cotta roofing. Roof tiles of this variety are made from all-natural clay that has been fired in a kiln to promote the removal of moisture. This material is very durable and sturdy. In fact, roofing of this type is still intact on buildings that were built over 200 years ago. At Traditional Design, we offer reclaimed antique roof tiles of only the highest quality. They have been sourced from France, Spain, Italy, and Eastern Europe and reclaimed from estates, villas, and older buildings that were made from 50 to 200 years ago.

Because terra cotta roofing is made from all-natural material, it is sustainable as well. You will be also getting reclaimed materials, that are already manufactured materials that have been recycled for re-use. At Traditional Designs, we have one of the widers selections of unique garden elements for landscaping. The different types of products that we have for the garden include beautiful fountains, unique sculpture, well-heads, troughs, and antique pots and urns. We offer a wide variety of each of these products as well. Our antique pots and urns were originally used as oil vats or containers for storing dired fruit and wine. However, they would make for excellent landscaping design pieces. They are all handmade from completely natural material.

Our highly experienced and skilled team of stone carvers can reproduce fountains and other garden elements, such as oil vats, pots and urns, to make them look like they have an “aged” appearance.  They are produced in the old-fashioned way by our stone carvers and design team and they are given a final inspection by our master craftsman to ensure the highest quality.  Due to this painstaking process, you will find our reproductions of these reclaimed materials to be exquisite pieces of the highest caliber, many of which are collector’s items that continue to rise in value.

France produces some of the most beautiful limestone in the world. These harvested sourced material have been used since antiquity and of a discerning clinetele that are lucky enough to purchase.

Jerusalem stone is a name applied to various types of pale limestone, dolomite and dolomitic limestone, common in and around Jerusalem, Israel, that have been used in building since ancient times. One of these limestones, meleke, has been used in many of the region’s most celebrated structures, including the Western Wall.

While meleke is scarce today, other types of Jerusalem stone continue to be used in construction and incorporated in Judaica such as menorahs and seder plates.

Today this rare stone is used for Traditional and Tuscan style Estates all over the world.

Reclaimed beams can be sawn into wider planks than the harvested lumber and many companies purport that their products are more stable than newly cut wood because reclaimed wood has been exposed to changes in humidity for far longer and therefore more stable, allowing them to be used with radiant heating systems.

In some cases, the timbers from which the boards were cut have been slightly expanding and contracting for over a century in their previous installation. Radiant heat, with its low temperatures and even distribution affects the wood flooring the same way, but the impact is much less dramatic with antique wood than newly sawn wood because antique wood has already been through this cycle for years.

Two other alternatives, sheep’s wool and cellulose are energy-efficient and avoid the negative environmental impacts of traditional materials. Sheep’s wool insulation for example requires less than 15% of the energy required to produce fibreglass insulation.

Sheep’s wool can absorb and release moisture from the surrounding air without compromising its thermal efficiency. During the winter, the wool releases energy in the form of heat while absorbing moisture. In the warmer months, the wool naturally releases this moisture creating a cooling effect in the building.

Cellulose, which is made from recycled news print and other paper sources, can be blown into cavity walls to act as insulation. The production of this material requires far less energy than fibreglass or foam products, and has lower embodied energy. The Canadian Building Magazine believes fibreglass uses at least 10 times more embodied energy than cellulose.

We feel that we might as well use the materials that have already been harvested- if we can do our part to make as little impact as possible on the environment, we will attract the kind of projects we want to work on. And network with people that are successful, but doing it the right way.

The use of reclaimed materials in the construction process is another sustainable technique being adopted by eco-friendly developers. By reusing materials recovered from demolished or renovated buildings, developers may dramatically increase the sustainability of the construction sector.

Traditional Materials & Designs believe that using reclaimed materials, carefully garnered from dismantled buildings, could reduce environmental impacts and save up to 95% of the embodied costs by preventing unnecessary production of new raw materials, and reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill.

Bricks, roof slates, tiles, fireplaces, doors and windows can all be reused in new developments. In addition to diverting materials from the waste stream, the use of reclaimed materials also has practically no environmental impact.

The châteaux, numbering more than three hundred, represent a nation of builders starting with the necessary castle fortifications in the 10th century to the splendor of those built half a millennium later. Their presence in the lush, fertile valley began attracting the very best landscape designers.

By the middle of the 16th century, France from the Loire back to the ancient capital of Paris. With him went the great architects, but the Loire Valley continued to be the place where most of the French royalty preferred to spend the bulk of their time. Nonetheless, those who gained the king’s favour and the wealthy bourgeoisie continued to renovate existing châteaux or build lavish new ones as their summer residence in the Loire.

Today, these privately owned châteaux serve as homes, a few open their doors to tourist visits, while others are operated as hotels or bed and breakfasts. Many have been taken over by a local government authority or the giant structures like those at Chambord are owned and operated by the national government and are major tourist sites, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Some of these chateaux’s have been bought and salvaged like companies like us. We “recycle” or reuse the materials that we feel are still beautiful art pieces. The way we recreate beauty from beauty is simply through experience.
